I don’t have a sweet tooth, but I do LOVE ice cream. Seriously, I have an app on my phone so I can check the flavor of the day at The Dairy Godmother, my local source for custard crack. If the flavor of the day is one of my favorites, it can be a drop everything and grab a pint situation, or worse.
So, what’s a girl to do? I am always looking for ways to game up, and take a habit that does not serve me and find a way to improve it with health boosting benefits. Basically, taking a bad habit and making it into a better habit without sacrificing the pleasure it was giving me.
Bananas are a nutritional powerhouses. Bananas are packed with potassium, a mineral that benefits bone and muscle health and benefits blood pressure. They also contain fiber that helps to keep cholesterol and blood pressure in check, keeps you feeling fuller longer and supports gut health. Bananas are also a good source of vitamin B 6 and vitamin C.
What I love, besides how magically simple this recipe is, is that the basic recipe takes about 2 minutes to make and satisfies event the pickiest of ice cream eaters. You can boost the health benefits by adding other fruits, spices or flavorings and literally make the healthiest gelato on the planet.
I now keep a container of bananas in my freezer for those emergency situations. Ice cream is no longer a guilty pleasure, it is a health boosting happy snack.

Banana Gelato Basic Recipe
Frozen bananas turn into creamy deliciousness in this simple gelato recipe. You can create your favorite flavor with the addition of seasonal fruits, spices, nuts, cocoa powder or what ever inspires you.
Ingredients
- 2 bananas thickly sliced
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup barista style almond milk
Instructions
Place sliced bananas on a cookie sheet and freeze. I always keep a bag frozen banana slices ready to go!
Put all ingredients in the bowl of a food processor pulsing until smooth and creamy. Scrape downsides of bowl as needed. 3-5 minutes.
- Serve immediately as gelato or place in freezer-safe container and use ice-cream scoop later.
- Add 1 cup of sliced frozen strawberries to food processor bowl. Garnish with fresh blueberries and strawberries.
