I always talk about opening your windows to minimize indoor air pollution and get cleaner oxygen into your home. But did you know it’s also a great sleep hack?
It’s even a part of my 15-Minute Powerful Morning Routine. Because overnight, CO2 levels rise, humidity increases, and airborne particles settle—making the air in your home, and especially your bedroom, less than fresh. It’s actually a little gross when you think about it.
It’s called Lüften, and Europeans have been practicing it for centuries.
Lüften Improves Your Health:
• Boosts oxygen levels – More oxygen means better concentration, energy, and overall brain function.
• Reduces airborne pollutants – Indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air due to dust, mold spores, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Lüften helps clear them out.
• Cuts down on allergens – Opening your windows allows pet dander, pollen, and other irritants to disperse rather than accumulate.
• Regulates humidity – Keeping moisture levels in check prevents mold growth and helps ease respiratory issues.
• Improves sleep quality – Studies show that cooler, fresher air promotes deeper sleep and reduces nighttime restlessness.
How to Lüften:
1. Morning Refresh: Open your bedroom window for 5-10 minutes to replace stale, CO2-filled air with oxygen-rich freshness.
2. Daytime Boost: If you’re home, crack open a few windows to maintain airflow and keep your space feeling light and clean.
3. Pre-Bed Cool Down: Before sleeping, open your windows briefly—cooler air helps lower your core temperature for better sleep.
Try it.
