The holiday season is a magical time, but to be honest—it can also feel like a marathon of “required” traditions. Let’s talk holiday survival tips!
From juggling family schedules and managing expectations to dealing with emotions (we lost my dad this year), it’s no wonder stress levels rise and schedules go out the window.
Sometimes it’s that extra latte, or wine a couple of nights in a row that can trigger the emotional overwhelm. This will be the first year without my dad, and that’s hard.
Here’s the good news: as Active Grandparents & Agers, we have the tools to turn holiday chaos into cherished moments.
These are a few simple strategies I use to dial things down – my holiday survival tips:
➡️ Set Realistic Expectations: Not every tradition has to happen every year. Focus on what brings the most joy to everyone involved. Maybe even add something new to the holiday mix.
➡️ Prioritize Self-Care: Hydration, morning stretches, and even a quick walk can work wonders for your energy and patience.
➡️ Be the Calm in the Storm: Model relaxation and adaptability for the family. Take that chill pill and just dial it down as an example to everyone who could be doing better. You know who you are. Grandchildren, as we all know, do what they see, not always what we say! Which is why sometimes, a loving “no” to overcommitment is the best “yes” you can give yourself and your family.
Remember, the holidays aren’t about perfection—they’re about connection. And with a little space and keeping that oxygen mask on yourself, you can help create memories that your children and grandchildren will cherish. Because sometimes it’s the quiet, uneventful moments that become the most memorable.
